The market for wearables has been at the center of the controversy since its birth. Many thought that it would be the next revolution after the smartphone, and over the years we have ended up seeing that it would not have the same success.
We do not use a watch for the same thing that we use a mobile, so sometimes it is better to have a device dedicated to fewer functions, but to do them as it should. The new Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro is an example of this. A device oriented for those who seek to quantify their daily exercise, in addition to having some extra features.
Analysis of the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro
What is an intelligent band for? Is it really useful? These are two questions that my acquaintances have made to me these weeks when talking about the Gear Fit 2 Pro.
Although we will inquire about it throughout this analysis, we would like to summarize in a simple way what possibilities it offers us to have a sports band. Not all have the same uses, but in the case of the Gear Fit 2 Pro we can do the following:
- Make a count of steps a day.
- According to our weight, size and exercise, count the calories burned.
- To be able to count how many glasses or cups of coffee we take each day.
- Have a record of all the exercise we do up to date. Sometimes it is automatic, sometimes through an app.
- Measure our sleep record.
- Control of heart rate.
- Access to notifications and possibility to answer them.
- Calendar, alarm, countdown, time.
- To be able to find our phone.
- Music player.

Physical appearance: Very similar to Gear Fit 2
As we can see in the specifications and appearance, the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro is very similar to a model that has been on the market for some time. We are talking about the Samsung Gear Fit 2, a device that we already analyzed in its day.
In essence, they are devices that look a lot, although this new version weighs 4 grams more and is somewhat thicker, although it is something unimportant on a daily basis. The main change is in the belts, which have changed both in colors, as in appearance. Something differential, although we can exchange them.
In general, we find a sports band that stands out for its curved design, something that helps you feel more comfortable to wear on a day to day basis.
If we look at the front, we will find a curved glass in which the screen is located, with a frame wide enough for us to miss an ambient light sensor.
Moving to the lower area, highlights the heart rate reader, next to the charging pins, as this band charges by a Samsung proprietary base. On the side, we will have two physical buttons, one that will allow us to interact with certain menus and another that serves as the start button.
Regarding the materials, the strap is made of rubber and the band of a hard plastic with a soft texture. We know that they are not the most premium materials in the market, but considering that it is an accessory intended for sport, it seems to us the correct decision, if we consider the durability factor.
A review of the system
Setting up the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro is very simple, although the process requires that we have a little free time. It is compatible with any Android phone that has at least Android 4.4 (4.3 if it is from Samsung) and 1.5 GB of RAM, and will require that we install the Samsung Gear application. Once installed, the installation process will be guided (next-> next-> next …) and will install some extra applications, necessary for clock synchronization. You will also have to log in to our Samsung account, having to create it if we did not have any.
Once the configuration process is finished, we will be on the main screen, where we will have the clock, in addition to information such as calories burned, steps traveled during the day or heart rate.
If we slide to the left we can see the notifications that arrive from our mobile, notifications that we can respond from the clock. Yes, with predefined answers.
By sliding to the right, we will have a series of widgets that show us more detailed information. We can change the order of the widgets, as well as add or remove them. As an important point, we will have a calendar or time. As a negative note, a stopwatch and countdown widget would have been great.
We have two physical buttons. The lower one will serve to open the menu of applications, among which we will have countdown, chronometer, calendar, water and coffee beaker account, music and swimming application, of which we will tell you more details later.
Another great absence is the alarm application, although in this case there will be no problems since we can install it from the application store. To access the app store we just have to go to the Samsung Gear app on the mobile and open Samsung Galaxy Apps. In the store, we can download applications such as Alarm and Spotify, as well as new aspects of our watch.
By the way, to change the look of our watch we just have to keep pressing on the main screen and choose the screen that we like the most.
Good autonomy, depending on the use you give
During the month that I have been testing intensively the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro there is an aspect in which I wanted to look good, and it is in its autonomy. I come from a Huawei Watch that did not give me any problems, but the truth is that the battery of any Android Wear was good.
Samsung watches use Tizen as a system, which is lighter. Does this affect the use of the battery? I would say yes because with a much less powerful battery I have gotten better usage figures, although I regret to say that you will have to go through the charger often.
Under normal conditions, using it as a clock capable of keeping track of our notifications has reached almost four days of use, restricting some settings such as the automatic exercise measurement or the heart rate record.
However, for the sports user, who will make intensive use of this band, will have to go through the plug practically every day, something that has happened to me on training days.
Activating the GPS, recording exercises such as walking, running, cycling and swimming, in addition to a couple of hours of music playback, I ended up arriving at the end of the day with approximately 15% battery. Yes, using only the band as the main device.
Application for swimmers: The great exclusive
It was one of the great announcements Samsung made during its presentation. The South Korean company had partnered with Speedo to launch an application dedicated to swimmers. For those who do not know, Speedo is one of the leading brands in the world of swimming.
Without a doubt, it was what I was most interested in trying out of this new Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro since I practice swimming quite regularly (3-4 days a week).
I liked the results because the application is able to measure the distance we are swimming, in addition to continuously monitoring our intensity during the exercise. The accuracy is usually quite accurate, although sometimes it does not show exactly what we have swum, update after update works better. A few weeks ago we did the analysis of the application, which we recommend you read if you are interested.
Music player: A very useful feature
A feature that I liked a lot of the Gear Fit 2 Pro that I would like to highlight. This sports band does not include a speaker, but we can synchronize any Bluetooth headset, which will work without problems.
From the music application, we can use the clock itself to control the music that sounds on our mobile, although it is not the most interesting function.
Through the application of Samsung Gear, we can send our music to the watch by Bluetooth connection, either manually or synchronize all our music. That yes, you must take into account a couple of things:
- The music is transferred by Bluetooth. If you want to transfer many tracks or a heavy podcast (30-50MB) it will take a long time to be sent.
- The Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro has 2 GB of storage for the user. You can put in a lot of music, but maybe not all of your library.
What we liked the most, is that once we add music to the sports band, we can listen to our music regardless of whether we leave our mobile at home. Very useful to avoid taking the phone to run or train.
On the other hand, from the app store, we can also download Spotify, although we will need to have the mobile nearby (or WiFi access in the Gear Fit 2 Pro) to listen to music from this application.
Automatic record of exercises
Another function that we liked a lot is the automatic recording of exercises. Thanks to the sensors of this bracelet, she herself will know when we are walking, running or riding a bike. For this type of exercise you will start to automatically register when you perform the exercise, making a count of the distance traveled, the time and calories burned.
The exercises that are automatically detected are the following:
- Elliptical bike.
- Rowing machine.
- Dynamic exercise
The result? Well, quite accurate on most occasions. And I say majority because on some occasion using the car I have registered cycling sessions that I clearly have not done. During the month it has happened a couple of times, so it has not turned out to be any problem either. With the rest of the exercises, everything worked perfectly.
Conclusions: A dignified renewal
Last year we concluded our analysis praising the quality of the Gear Fit 2, being one of the best sports wristbands, and it is time to judge whether its successor is worth it.
Let’s get to the point if you’re a swimmer and you’re interested in measuring your workouts, it’s a direct purchase since Speedo On has seemed like a great application. What if I do not practice swimming?
The Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro is a slight renewal of the Gear Fit 2. Both design and features have not been many changes that are visible to the naked eye. There is not a big revolution in any sense, but the Gear Fit 2 had set the bar very high. If you do not swim and find a good offer, the Gear Fit 2 is still great.
