Hurricane Max Degraded to Tropical Storm on Thursday Few Hours After Touching Mexican Territory on the Pacific Coast , National Hurricane Center ( NHC ) reported.
In early hours of Thursday, the storm moved at 13 km / h and had maximum sustained winds of 110 km / h, according to the last part of the NHC. Max had landed in Guerrero as a Category 1 hurricane and maximum winds of 130 km / h.
It is expected to cause heavy rains in the southern state of Guerrero and neighboring Oaxaca , which was shaken by a magnitude-8.2 earthquake last week that left dozens dead in that region.
The earthquake also hit the states of Chiapas and Tabasco , but Oaxaca was the most affected and is now threatened by Max.
The Secretary of Labor and Social Welfare , Alfonso Navarrete , explained that many victims in Oaxaca and Chiapas have not agreed to go to shelters for fear of losing the few assets they managed to save.
” With the rain that is coming in the next few days in these areas of these states, Oaxaca and Chiapas, conditions may change unfavorably, ” Navarrete said from Tuxtla Gutierrez, capital of the southeastern state of Chiapas.
Prior to the arrival of Max, fishermen and other sailors retired their boats of the sea in the beaches of the Bay of Acapulco , known like the old or traditional hotel zone, that during the holiday seasons is visited mainly by national tourists.
Persistent rain and high winds kept residents and visitors away from the beach early, local TV showed.
” These torrential rains could produce flash floods and landslides that are life-threatening, ” warned the latest meteorological report.
The National Water Commission ( CONAGUA ) of Mexico said earlier rains and wind gusts between 70 and 80 km / h in states are also expected Michoacan and Colima , which also have coast in the Pacific , as well as high waves .
Meanwhile, the state electricity company, CFE , reported that it initiated a contingency plan in the wake of Max, deploying hundreds of workers and emergency equipment to deal with possible damage, mainly in Guerrero.
The NHC also reported that another tropical storm, Norma, was formed in the Pacific and was centered about 580 kilometers south of Cabo San Lucas , in northwestern Mexico.
Last week Hurricane Katia hit the Mexican coast in the Atlantic, and later dissipated in the center of the country without causing major damage.
In early September, Tropical Storm Lidia left seven dead after passing through the state of Baja California Sur , in northwestern Mexico.
Because of its location and wide coastline, in the Pacific as in the Atlantic, Mexico is one of the countries most vulnerable to the onslaught of hurricanes.
